Archaeology Night 3rd Annual- SOHS
You don’t have to go digging far afield to be an archaeologist. Join the Southern Oregon Historical Society and the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA) at SOHS Hanley Farm between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, for our third annual “Archaeology Night.” The farm is located at 1053 Hanley Road (Hwy. 238) in Central Point, just one mile east of Jacksonville.
This free, fun, family-centered event will get you thinking like an archaeologist with Archaeology 101 activities that include artifact cross-mending, build-your-own stratigraphy jars, and compass-reading. You can try your hand at the ancient art of atlatl throwing or test your animal bone knowledge with our “Faunal Matching” game.
Come hear about the latest finds from SOULA’s just concluded "Public Archaeology and Remote Sensing" summer field school. A pop-up exhibit about the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project will be on view as will the Jim Rock Historic Bottle and Can Collection and artifacts from the Hanley Farm archaeological site. Partner booths with additional activities will be hosted by the Medford Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Crater Rock Museum.
Pack a picnic and enjoy the beautiful grounds of this National Historic Landmark and Living History Century Farm. While exploring, try your hand at our History Scavenger Hunt. Delicious Filipino and Hawaiian food will also be available for purchase from Mary Jane's Bento food truck.
Bring the whole family for a fun night being amateur archaeologists while learning about Oregon's archaeological history
