Hanley Farm Heritage Plant Sale

All three generations of Hanleys, across 125 years, contributed to building the lush and unique landscape that is Hanley Farm today. Volunteers at the Southern Oregon Historical Society propagate starts from as many as 70 different varieties of plants.

This is your chance to bring some history into your garden! More than 500 of these perennials are on sale this year. There are purple and lavender lilacs descended from some that Martha Hanley planted in the mid -1800s. There are peonies, flowering quince, iris and daylilies. There are hellebores and sweet little snow drops that bloom in February. There are asters and Japanese anemones that bloom in the fall. Pollinator plants beneficial to native bees and butterflies will also be available as will four hundred heritage tomato plants from our volunteer growers.

A special feature is the now two-year-old Shakespeare garden that is maturing nicely. It is being tended by the Family Nurturing Center at Hanley Farm. Take a stroll and discover familiar plants that are mentioned in Shakespeare’s writings.

This year’s raffle prizes are two large, lushly planted strawberry pots. These are older pots (with new plants!) that have achieved a lovely patina.

Self-guided garden tours can be taken with brochures provided that explain the family history and unique plantings in the landscape including the Hanley Willow, an Oregon Heritage Tree. A children’s activities tent will available to keep the kiddies entertained while the adults peruse and load wagons with their plant selections. Wagon rides will be offered and The Hanley Mercantile will have special gift items for sale—always reasonably priced.

Docents in period dress will be on hand to give historic Hanley House tours from noon to 3 both days--$5 for adults and $3 for SOHS members and children under 13. Food and beverages will be available for purchase with picnic tables set up under the trees. And, of course, opportunities abound for taking beautiful photos. Enjoy the day in the beautiful surroundings of historic Hanley Farm. All proceeds benefit the preservation of and public access to the Southern Oregon Historical Society’s Hanley Farm.
