Windows In Time: THE CHINOOK SALMON MIGRATIONS TO THE UPPER KLAMATH RIVER

Windows In Time: THE CHINOOK SALMON MIGRATIONS TO THE UPPER KLAMATH RIVER

Speaker: John Hamilton

John was the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) lead for relicensing of the Klamath River Hydroelectric Project from 2000 to 2017. His work relied upon experience as an FWS Hydropower Licensing specialist in Michigan and his work for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Alaska. These responsibilities included drafting of Department of the Interior’s fishway prescriptions. When the factual

basis for these prescriptions was challenged in a 2006 trial-type hearing, John was the FWS lead in successfully defending DOI/DOC fishway prescriptions. He retired in 2017 and no longer represents the FWS. However, John has offered to provide this history of Chinook salmon migrations upstream from dams on the Klamath River. He and his family live in the Rogue Valley where they ski, fish, and raise dogs.

The monthly “Windows in Time” lunchtime lectures are offered free to the public on the first and second Wednesday throughout the year from 12 noon–1:00 p.m. The Southern Oregon Historical Society and Jackson County Library Services co-sponsor the lecture series.
